The Truth about Doggy Daycares

Hey Dog Lovers,

Today’s topic can be one of the more controversial topics I cover, however after working in a doggy daycare for 4 years and now becoming a dog trainer I believe for some dogs it is beneficial and others it is not, I will elaborate more below.

Four Main Reasons Why Dog Daycare is so beneficial to your dog:

  1. Socialization – without this dogs can become anti-social and can lead to dog reactivity, anxiety and aggression toward other dogs. Not every dog likes to play with other dogs but that doesn’t mean early and consistent socialization is bad as they can learn to tolerate other dogs. (Aussie)
  2. Learning Social Cues- although sometimes not the best habits of these social cues are learned the basics are helpful to most dogs
  3. Exercise- dogs need exercise but very few people actually do it. The problem is usual a lack of time to do so, day care offers that for many.
  4. You get a break- Although if you work not at home you get one anyway, however having them distracted all day playing (if they enjoy it) then it is beneficial.

What Dogs are well suited for dog daycare?

Puppies- Socialization is critical for young puppies, without positive exposure to other dogs in an off leash environment they can develop anxiety, fear or aggression

Adolescent Dogs- Teenage dogs can be about as fun as teenage kids. Without constructive time they can get destructive.

High Energy Breeds- Labs, Pits, German Shepard’s, Dalmatians, Jack Russell and other hyper dogs that need to run day care is good for you.

Working Dogs (Not ALL) – Without the stimulation some can present behavioral issues

What dogs are NOT Good

Very Anxious Puppies

Fearful Adult Dogs

Dog Reactive or Aggressive Dogs

Tips for Doing Daycare

  1. Drop your dog and leave ASAP- Just like kids dropping off at daycare make it short and sweet. Do Not Drag it out.
  2. Give your dog time to adjust- a little time to adjust is usually what most dogs need when starting to go to daycare, it is normal.
  3. Don’t binge watch the webcam- Just look for a minute and then get off, dont hover or obsess.
  4. Don’t sweat the small stuff – sometimes (although proper supervision and sanitary ways would prevent this) they can come home with kennel cough or a scratch its normal.
  5. Do some homework to help your dog-help by determining what your dog needs and how to treat it daycare may not be the answer.

Don’ts of Dog Training

Hey Dog Lovers,

Don’ts of Dog Training:

  1. Don’t ever allow other to pamper your dog any more than you would.  Your dog must look to you for leadership
  2. Don’t ever finish a training session on a bad note. Remain positive and praise for any progress made, even the smallest
  3. Don’t punish them while you are angry. Training should be pleasurable and nourishing experience for both of you
  4. Don’t Lose your temper while training. They need to understand that you are in control
  5. Don’t chase him if you want him to come (recall) . Make them come to you with treats and excitement in your body and voice.
  6. Don’t deceive your dog. Never shower them in praise then punish them for being bad, it confuses them
  7. Don’t continually repeat the same command to your dog until he executes it. He should understand you very early. Be patient and do not over use the command
  8. Don’t discipline your dog for disobedience unless you are certain that he understands the command you gave. **Remember Discipline and punishment are two very different things.  **
  9. Don’t reward your dog for a given behavior then later admonish him for the same behavior. Consistency is crucial.
  10. Don’t allow anybody else to command your dog while you’re training

Want Your Dog to Stay Healthy? Then Check Out These Tips

Hey Dog Lovers ,

Please enjoy today’s guest post!

Let’s face it, all of you reading this will probably agree that your dog is part of your family, and let me tell you, I feel the same way. As part of your family, it is also your job to make sure your dog lives a long, happy, and healthy lifestyle. In this article, I would like to share with you some useful tips straight from the vet that can help your dog minimize the risk of developing certain cardiovascular as well as respiratory problems.

Most of it Comes Down to Exercise

Funny, right? Wrong! When your dog doesn’t get enough exercise with or without you, indoors or out, then his or her health can be compromised much sooner than a dog that is in shape. When your dog becomes out of shape, or if you habitually feed it human food, or sweets, then you run a real risk of your best friend becoming obese and possibly developing diabetes, or as mentioned above, heart and breathing problems.

What You Should Look Out For

If you notice that your dog waddles when it walks, or if its shape is looking somewhat square, then it is time to see a vet, so you can have a plan of action to get your pal back in shape. Another symptom to look out for is rapid breathing when laying down, or when your dog is doing very minimal exercise.

Remember Exercise Also Keeps Your Canine Happy

When you play with your pooch, I think we all know there is an added benefit to this, and it isn’t all about physical health, but it has to do with mental wellbeing and happiness. Playing games with your beloved dog can help strengthen your bond with the two of you, and your best friend will adore you for it. Show your dog you love and care about him or her, and try to play games with each other for at least thirty minutes a day.

Do’s of Dog Training

Hey Dog Lovers,

Do’s of Dog Training:

  1. Focus on your dog. Training is about bringing them into the world by understanding his instincts and natural behaviors.
  2. Be honest with them. Never fool them into doing what you want or tease him with commands you teach them.
  3. Begin each command with the end in sight. Reward your dog lavishly – but only when the task asked for is completed.
  4. Be Consistent. Always use the same words for desired behaviors and same tone of voices
  5. Think Ahead. Anticipate your dogs actions before they move
  6. Reward your dog immediately. They need to learn to associate praise with specific act
  7. Teach one command at a time. More than one command at a time can confuse even the smartest dogs
  8. Allow enough time for them to take in the command and then act. They may not react immediately but its not disobedience. Be Patient.
  9. Enjoy yourself and they will to. They will learn to associate his training with companionship, make sure to play with them before and after them
  10. Be kind and Patient. A poorly trained dog is the fault of the trainer, not the dog
